After watching the “Teenager Attacked For Deadlifting in Montreal” video, I figured I should share my response and my opinion on the matter. As a gym owner myself, I would have taken a different approach to diffuse the situation.

  3. A member of a Montreal-area gym who hit another member for making too much noise while powerlifting has been barred from the facility.

As well, a staff member has been suspended in connection with the incident, said Craig Johnson, head of operations for Buzzfit gyms, on Sunday evening.

Nineteen-year-old Charles Lalonde was at the Greenfield Park location of Buzzfit at about 10 p.m. on Aug. 2. He was doing a powerlifting exercise known as deadlifting, in which a bar holding weights is lifted off the ground to hip level, then lowered back down.

Lalonde was midset, lifting 350 pounds, and caught off guard when his assailant approached and, visibly agitated, appeared to kick the barbell out of his hands and shove Lalonde against the wall of the gym, all the while yelling at him to “get out.”

The video was posted by Tennessee-based powerlifting coach and trainer Pete Rubish, who has been working with Lalonde for about a year.

Rubish, a professional power lifter, has been coaching power lifting online for more than four years and said he had been working with Lalonde for about a year.

He tells his clients what lifts he wants them to do — power lifting consists of squats and bench presses in addition to deadlifting — and has them film some of their sets and send them to him to review and use in coaching them. So Lalonde had propped up his smartphone on the ground on Thursday and “the camera was rolling,” Rubish said.

Had his assailant seen it, “no doubt he wouldn’t have done what he did.”

Deadlifting is, by its nature, noisy. A few members had complained about the noise and Lalonde had had “a few incidents where the staff was giving him a hard time,” Rubish said.

“You are picking the bar up off the ground. All the work and benefit you are receiving is on the way up … when you put it back down, you can’t not drop it,” he explained. It’s impossible to lower a bar holding heavy weights “slowly enough that it will land without making noise,” he said.

The majority of Buzzfit members are first-time gym users, Johnson said. “We are not equipped for the hardcore workout he was doing. He was lifting at an elite level of powerlifting, which requires specialized facilities.”

A deadlift platform, which makes for a quieter landing for weights, is common in serious heavyweight gyms, Rubish said.

Lalonde had been asked to place mats under the weight plates and he had complied, Johnson said. “On this day when he was working out, it wasn’t that much of an issue because he had made the adjustments he had been asked to make.”

The man who assaulted him is not a Buzzfit employee, Johnson said, and he was not well known to staff. “We had to go through video footage” to identify him.

Lalonde “was pretty upset” when he sent the video of the incident to Rubish, who decided to post it on his YouTube channel, which is followed by 67,000 people. “I thought it would get some playback within the power lifting community,” he said.

What the gym member did to the teen “was about as disrespectful a move as anyone could do — and kind of dangerous, too,” he said. “And it’s just bullying, which is why people are so outraged.”

In attacking Lalonde, “I think it came down to the guy picking on someone he thought would be an easy target,” he said. “I think that’s what sparked the outrage. It’s a classic example of someone not picking on someone his own size.”

The Buzzfit staff member who was suspended said he had just caught the end of the exchange between the two “and didn’t know what was going on,” Johnson said.

“He should have been on top of it to begin with. The poor kid in that situation shouldn’t have had to deal with that,” he said.

    “It’s a terrible incident.”

He said Buzzfit has tried, without success so far, to contact Lalonde, and wants to offer him and his family a lifetime membership.

Lalonde could not be reached for comment on Sunday. Rubish said “from what I know, he is going to press charges, but I don’t know if he has.”

As of Sunday, Johnson said he had not been contacted by police.

  26. In either situation the management is to blame. If it was an employee that is completely uncalled for and should’ve been fired on the spot. If it was a patron, shame on them for allowing such a behavior to happen. One time apparently some patrons were saying that I was deadlifting too loudly on a warm up set (I wasn’t letting it slam like a douche though) and the manager very calmly came over to me after a set and told me he understands what I was doing and respects that, but I’m going to need to keep it down. We came to a compromise of I just put mats down. That’s how every encounter like this should be handled. We both ended up achieving our goal in a very civil manner. No excuses for this in my opinion
