FAQ: What you need to know about Montreal’s 2026 World Cup bid

It’s a time of celebration for local soccer fans.

With a 135-64 vote on Wednesday, FIFA’s member associations have chosen the United States, Mexico and Canada as the host countries for the 2026 World Cup of soccer — and Montreal has made the shortlist of three potential Canadian hosts.

This will be the first time that Canada will host the tournament.

When will we know if Montreal is selected?

The city was one of 23 included in the joint North American bid as a potential venue for the tournament, but only 16 cities will be selected as official hosts. That decision will be made by FIFA in 2021.

The other Canadian cities included on the list are Toronto and Edmonton.
