Update: Gas leak forces street closures in downtown Montreal

The Montreal police are asking people to avoid downtown Montreal Thursday evening as a gas leak has forced the partial closure of several streets and the evacuation of the Eaton Centre.

According to the Montreal fire department, a gas leak was reported around 3 p.m. at the corner of Ste-Catherine St. W. and McGill College Ave. The department could not immediately be reached for comment on what caused the leak.

A spokesperson for Énergir, formerly Gaz Métro, said the leak occurred when a “third party” punctured a gas pipe downtown.

Énergir workers were dispatched to the scene and the leak had been controlled by 6:10 p.m., the company said. Necessary repairs to the pipe should be finished by Friday morning.
