If you’re old enough to remember the Friendly Giant children’s TV show that aired on CBC from 1958 to 1985, you’ll recall the opening words: “Look up …. waaaaay up.”
I had a flashback to that show when I interviewed St. Louis defenceman Colton Parayko in the Blues’ dressing room at the Bell Centre after the team’s morning skate Tuesday before a game against the Canadiens. I’m 6-foot-3, but I felt very small standing beside the 6-foot-6, 230-pound Parayko, who was still in his skates. When we shook hands mine basically disappeared into his huge mitt.
Parayko stands out anywhere he goes and has been standing very tall on the St. Louis blue-line after the Blues selected him in the third round (86th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft after nobody took him in 2011, his first year of eligibility.
