Driver in fatal Kahnawake crash charged in court

A 22-year-old man was formally charged Monday in connection with a fatal car crash that took place in Kahnawake during the weekend. 

According to the Kahnawake Peacekeepers, Anthony Robertson was arraigned at the Longueuil courthouse on 22 charges, including two counts of impaired driving and negligence causing death.

He was also charged with leaving the scene of a deadly accident and other counts related to dangerous driving. Two of the charges are unrelated to the incident. 

Two men, 17 and 21, died in the crash. Three women, two 18-year-olds and one 19-year-old, were injured. The crash happened on a residential stretch of Veterans Blvd. around 3 a.m. Saturday. Police believe the vehicle swerved, struck a parked car and caught fire.

Robertson will remain detained until his bail hearing.
