The city of Bécancour confirmed on Wednesday that an explosion and fire had occurred at the ABI aluminum plant and that no injuries had been reported.
City spokesperson Marie-Michèle Barrette said the explosion and fire occurred in the “foundry section” of the plant.
Speaking from the site at 10:45 a.m., Barrette said there no longer was any smoke coming from the plant but could not determine whether the fire had been brought under control.
“We’re still very far from the site where the fire broke out,” she said, adding that firefighters were in “exploration” mode at the moment.
Local firefighters have sufficient personnel to deal with the flames but needed to use a ladder truck from Trois-Rivières to deal with the incident.
The refinery has been operated by management personnel since 1,000 workers were locked out in January 2018.
